Sump Pump Checklist Before the Snow Melts

A few minutes of testing before spring thaw can keep your basement dry. Here is what to check.

In much of Michigan, the spring thaw and heavy April rains are when sump pumps work hardest. A pump that sat idle all winter can fail right when you need it, so it's worth checking before the snow melts.

Your 10-minute spring checklist

  1. Check the power. Make sure the pump is plugged in to a working outlet. A GFCI outlet that has tripped is a common cause of a "dead" pump.
  2. Test it with water. Slowly pour a bucket of water into the pit. The float should rise, the pump should switch on, empty the pit and shut off on its own.
  3. Look at the float. Make sure nothing is keeping the float switch from moving freely — cords, debris or the pit wall.
  4. Clean the pit and inlet screen. Remove silt, gravel and debris that can clog the intake or jam the float.
  5. Check the discharge line. The outside end should be clear of ice and debris and should carry water well away from your foundation.
  6. Listen for trouble. Grinding, rattling or a pump that runs constantly can mean a worn motor or a failed check valve.
  7. Test the backup. If you have a battery backup pump, test it and check the battery's age.

When to consider replacing it

Sump pumps commonly last around 7–10 years, depending on how often they run. If yours is near that age, runs constantly, or struggles to keep up during heavy rain, it's a good time to plan a replacement — before an emergency instead of during one. A battery backup is also worth considering if you've ever lost power during a storm.
